The Simple Skincare Routine, In Order
Skincare looks complicated because the internet profits from making it complicated. In reality, a good routine is four steps in a fixed order, morning and night, with one rule: thinnest to thickest. Light, watery products go first so they can reach skin; heavier creams go last to seal everything in. Reverse the order and the thick stuff blocks the thin stuff from absorbing. Here's the routine, why each step exists, and how mornings differ from nights.
Step 1: Cleanser (Morning and Night)
Everything starts with a clean surface. Use lukewarm water — hot water strips skin — massage for 30 to 60 seconds, and rinse. If you wear sunscreen or makeup daily, the evening cleanse matters most. The Blu Atlas Volcanic Ash Face Cleanser ($20) is a straightforward daily cleanser for the morning refresh and the nighttime wash alike. Your skin should feel clean, not tight. Tight means the cleanser is too harsh for you.
Step 2: Treatment / Serum (Morning and/or Night)
Serums are concentrated formulas that target specific concerns — dullness, uneven tone, fine lines. Because they're thin and potent, they go right after cleansing, on slightly damp skin. A pea-sized amount is enough for the whole face. The Gleamin Superactive Serum ($49) fits here as your treatment step. One serum is plenty when you're starting out. The mistake to avoid is layering three different actives at once — that's how irritation happens.
Step 3: Moisturizer (Morning and Night)
Moisturizer seals in the treatment step and keeps your skin barrier intact. Skipping it is the most common routine error, including for oily skin — dehydrated oily skin just produces more oil to compensate. The Blu Atlas Hydrating Face Moisturizer ($20) is the everyday workhorse for this step, morning and night. Apply it while skin is still slightly damp from the serum step to lock in hydration.
Step 4: SPF (Morning Only)
The only step that changes between morning and night. UV damage is responsible for the large majority of visible skin aging, and it happens through windows and on cloudy days too. Every morning routine ends with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied last so it forms an even film over everything else.
Morning vs. Night, Side by Side
Morning: Cleanser → Serum (optional) → Moisturizer → SPF. Night: Cleanser → Serum → Moisturizer. That's it. No SPF at night — there's no sun to block.
Exfoliation: 2–3 Times a Week, Not Daily
Exfoliation removes dead skin buildup so everything else absorbs better. But it's a supplement, not a daily step — over-exfoliating causes redness, stinging, and breakouts. Use the Blu Atlas Exfoliating Scrub ($20) two to three times per week, ideally at night, in place of your regular cleanser step. If your skin feels raw or looks flushed afterward, drop back to once a week.
What to Skip When You're Starting Out
- Ten-step routines. Four steps done consistently outperform twelve done sporadically.
- Mixing many new actives at once. Introduce one product at a time so you know what works.
- Switching products weekly. Give any routine three to four weeks before judging it.
- Skipping moisturizer because your skin is oily.
Start with cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Add the serum once the basics are habit. Add exfoliation once or twice a week. That's the whole system.
Patch Test Anything New
Before putting a new product all over your face, test it on a small patch of skin — behind the ear or along the jawline — and wait 24 hours. This takes one day and saves you from a full-face reaction.
Adjust for Your Skin Type
The order never changes, but the textures should match your skin. Oily skin does best with lightweight gel cleansers, fluid serums, and oil-free gel moisturizers. Dry skin wants cream cleansers and richer moisturizers. Sensitive skin should introduce one product at a time and keep exfoliation to once a week. When a product stings consistently, stop using it — discomfort isn't a sign it's working.
