Tallow skincare sounds strange until you see the science. Learn why grass-fed tallow works so well as a moisturizer and which products are worth trying.
Of all the ingredients having a moment in clean beauty, beef tallow is the one that makes people do a double take. Rendered beef fat as a face moisturizer sounds like a dare. But the reason it keeps spreading by word of mouth is simple: for dry, irritated skin, it genuinely works, and the science behind it is more solid than the marketing of most luxury creams.
Tallow is rendered fat, traditionally from cattle. Its fatty acid profile, rich in oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, closely resembles the lipids in human skin. That similarity is the whole story: because it is biocompatible with your skin's own oils, it absorbs well and forms a protective layer that locks in moisture without the long preservative and fragrance lists of conventional creams.
Grass-fed tallow specifically is reported to contain higher levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K than grain-fed, along with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which has anti-inflammatory properties. A 2024 scoping review in the journal Cureus found tallow may help with dermatitis, psoriasis, dry skin, and wound healing by increasing fatty acid concentration in the skin.
Dry and flaky skin is the obvious one; tallow is an occlusive moisturizer, meaning it seals in water, which makes it ideal for dry patches, cracked heels, and winter-damaged hands. People with eczema-prone or easily irritated skin often do well with it because good tallow balms have ingredient lists you can count on one hand: no fragrance, no preservatives, nothing to react to. It also works as a lip balm, a hand cream, and a general-purpose barrier for windburned or chapped skin.
What it is not: a treatment for active acne breakouts on its own, or a replacement for sunscreen. Think of it as the world's simplest excellent moisturizer, not a cure-all.
The cattle's diet affects the fat's nutrient content, with grass-fed tallow reported to carry more vitamins and beneficial fatty acids. When shopping, look for labels that specifically say grass-fed. "Whipped" tallow just means it has been aerated for a lighter, creamier texture; it is the same ingredient underneath.

Shop nowTallow is rendered beef fat used as a moisturizer. Its fatty acid profile closely resembles the lipids in human skin, so it absorbs well and seals in moisture with a very short ingredient list.

Tallow is a moisturizer, not an acne treatment, and it is not the right pick for active breakouts on its own. It shines for dry, irritated, or eczema-prone skin.
A pea-sized amount is enough. Apply to clean, slightly damp skin as your moisturizer step, morning or night. A little goes a long way.
It has a faint natural scent that bothers almost nobody. If you are scent-sensitive, choose an unscented whipped option over the fragranced balms.
