What it is

The eau de parfum that started Laurel Bath House, a Los Angeles house that hand-fills small-batch fragrance and bath products. Mourning Wood is a quiet, woody composition built around oud wood, black rose, and upcycled cedar. Vegan, cruelty-free, 50 ml, made with non-endocrine disrupting oils.

What it does

Opens dark floral and settles into wood: black pepper snaps first, then sandalwood smooths it over, with a vetiver base that holds on like good company. The brand says it wears close and lasts long.

Who it's for

Anyone who leans toward dark, woody, original scents over bright ones. Layer it with Not Vanilla: one to open the night, then one to close it.

How to use

How much: One to two sprays. It wears close, so you do not need much.

1. Spray on pulse points: wrists, neck, behind the ears.
2. Let it settle for a minute before adding clothing layers.
3. For the brand's recommended pairing, layer under Not Vanilla to open the night, then close it with Mourning Wood.

Where it fits: Whenever you want the scent: mornings for a full-day wear, or right before heading out.

About the brand

Laurel Bath House

Functional fragrance, made to be lived in.

Laurel Bath House is an independent fragrance house. Their thing is functional fragrance — scent designed to be part of your day, not a special-occasion spray. The Layer Packs are their signature: two eau de parfums built to be worn on their own or layered into one blend.

Most niche fragrance asks you to commit to one expensive bottle and hope. Laurel's Layer Packs do the opposite — two full 50 mL bottles that teach you how to layer as you go. It's the most approachable way into real perfumery we've found, from a maker we'd hand you in person.

Fragrance questions, answered

How long will it last on skin?

These are eau de parfum, so expect several hours — most people get a full workday from 1 to 2 sprays. Scent lasts longer on moisturized skin and shorter in dry air. One honest note: you’ll stop noticing it before other people do. That’s normal — it doesn’t mean it’s gone.

Can I really layer them, or is that marketing?

Really. The two scents were composed as a pair — Mourning Wood brings the dark woods and rose, Cuffed brings the leather and tobacco, and together they read as one warm blend. Start with one spray of each; adjust the ratio once you know which side you lean toward.

Is this for men or women?

Neither, specifically. The notes — woods, leather, tobacco, a little raspberry — don’t lean traditionally masculine or feminine. Wear what you like the smell of.
